The MyoMinds Mission

To demystify mental health for exercisers and athletes, and to create an understanding future for the exercising community.

Sometimes the most outwardly healthy amongst us are the ones who are struggling the most. Statistically, athletes and individuals with a strong interest in sport and exercise are more likely to suffer from certain mental health issues, but these are often masked by the fact that “keeping fit” is seen as an antidote to mental health problems, rather than a potential cause. Because of this, poor mental health is still stigmatized within this group. To struggle with mental health, in an exercising community that demands positivity and toughness, can feel like a betrayal of yourself and those around you. So, many exercisers and athletes still don’t feel like they can share and speak up about the struggles they face.

We believe the first step to solving poor mental health is to understand it. That’s why we share stories and insights via our podcast, why we provide talks about exerciser mental health, and why we work with universities and other organisations to undertake research and create tools to accomplish our mission.

Experience

The MyoMinds community is filled with people from many different backgrounds: from professional athletes and researchers to dog walkers and gym goers. Odds are we have a story that you can relate to and learn from. If not, why not share your story? We’re always looking for new experiences to add to our collection of physical activity inspired stories. Your story could help someone realise they are not alone.

Understanding

We want people to understand. To understand others’, and their own, experiences of mental health issues. Understanding leads to earlier opportunities to find care, and often more success from the care provided. That’s why we carry out our research, why we engage in difficult conversation on our podcast, and why we educate via our talks to healthcare services, at universities, and with exercise proffesionals (PT’s, Coaches, etc).

Awareness

This word is thrown around a lot these days, but at MyoMinds we know that awareness truely is needed for this community. We do everything we can help spread the word and illuminate these issues to society. You might catch us on TV, on the radio, on podcasts and more. If you would like to help us spread the word, please contact us here.
